Smart Cities

Smart Cities

A Smart City exploits modern Information and Communications Technology (ICT) technologies to provide greater efficiencies for urban areas. It integrates ICT and Internet of Things (IoT) networked physical sensors and other devices to optimize the efficiency of city operations and services. A smart city thus enables officials to interact directly with both the community and city infrastructure to monitor city activities and demonstrate how the city is operating and evolving.

Smart Cities generate massive amounts of data through their networked sensors referred to as Big Data. Such datasets are collected at local, state, and federal levels in Australia. Many cities make their data accessible as open data for developers who can apply Machine Learning (ML) to develop Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) that can be accessed over the internet by city managers and citizens.

These APIs can be used to query these datasets and provide informed responses - API Academy. Such approaches are being adopted in smart cities worldwide.
